New Swiss Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Union
founded in Lugano

Lugano, 12 July 2007 – It is with great excitement and joy that the Union Suisse du Volleyball et de Beach Volleyball (USVB) has been launched today in Lugano, Switzerland.

Affiliated to the World Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Federation (WVBF) created in Copenhagen in November 2006, the Union du Volleyball et du Beach Volleyball Suisse, based in Lugano, is committed to fully respect the fundamental principles of the Olympic movement as well as the ethical, democratic and transparency principles of the WVBF..

The USVB stands out by providing the Swiss Volleyball players with a National Championship of mixed Volleyball, a dynamic National Women’s league, an educational Volleyball program in schools as well as a Handi Volley program. In a very simple way, this new association has the objective of making volleyball a « democratic” sport as a whole in Switzerland. “ The priority set towards school children, women and the handicapped goes along with the world development policy which has been very successful,” stressed Geneviève Mendoza-Lavanchy, WVBF vice-president and president of WVBF volleyball Worldwide Development.

Having these assets and vision for the future, the new Union is set on listening to children and to every person interested in discovering and practicing our sport; on standing by its members through concrete actions such as helping to create new clubs, organizing competitions, training coaches and referees. The USVB wishes above all, to make this sport available to all. « In Switzerland, Volleyball has suffered from a lack of recognition by the media and politicians; therefore the new association has already started a dialog with the different actors in order to give volleyball a more dynamic and youthful image,” said Philippe Mayor, candidate to USVB presidency.

The new Swiss Union is also determined to act in transparency in its dealings as well as its objectives. It acknowledges values such as solidarity, equality of treatment and personal responsibility of each individual in Fair Play and environmental matters. “We are glad to welcome into our WVBF family this new Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Union, trusting that it will stand by all those who desire a direct relationship and support on the part of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball leaders, strictly respecting ethics and Olympic fundamental principles,” declared Jean-Pierre Seppey, WVBF President.

The founders of this new association are ready to take on the challenges, to work hand in hand to give the sport the recognition and the aura that it deserves, with a spirit of fraternity and respect for each individual.
